  • Agrupamento de Escolas do Fundão

The origin of the cluster centre school - Secondary School of Fundão - dates back to the year of 1965, when it was named as the Industrial School of Fundão. In 2015 the school celebrated its 50th anniversary. The cluster of schools called Agrupamento de Escolas do Fundão (AEF) was constituted in June 2012 and it accommodates the Secondary and 3rd Cycle School of Fundão along with the João Franco’s cluster of schools. The current cluster is the single institution located in the district area of Fundão that provides secondary education studies. The cluster of school hosts about 1500 students, ranging from preschool education to the 12th year (twelve years of compulsory education). It offers different school paths that comprise regular and vocational courses. Beyond these training courses, it also engages in adult education and training provided by its Qualifica Centre. The mission of Fundão’s cluster of schools is to provide the local citizens with the necessary skills and knowledge to allow them to be fully integrated in a society in constant change. The AEF is located in a low populated territory, where the rate of the youth demographics has been declining steadily in opposition to the aging population, whose numbers have grown substantially.

  • Municipality of Pombal

    Innovation

Pombal is located in the center of Portugal and it is crossed by the main railroad connections (Northern Line) and by the highway (A1, A17, IC8 and IC2), the Municipality of Pombal extends for 626 square kilometers. The wealth of its heritage is not limited to its monuments – full of history - but it is manifested in its diverse and beautiful landscape, providing those who visit Pombal an opportunity to bathe their feet in the waters of Osso da Baleia Beach and extend their arms to the fresh air from Serra da Sicó Mountain. With a resident population of around 54 thousand, of which 34,128 are between 15 and 65 years old, Pombal has become a central development center. This is a result from careful planning, which integrates the municipal strategy for the promotion of industrial attractiveness. The existence of skilled human resources makes Pombal one of the most competitive counties in the Central Region of Portugal. With more than 7,000 children and young people (0-14 years old), Education is one of the essential focuses, assuming as an ambitious goal that by 2020 all of its elementary (6 to 9 years) students successfully complete basic education. In addition to being one of the 14 Municipalities that make up the first Network of Creative Cities in Portugal, which demonstrates initiative and vitality, Pombal also wants to become a privileged place for seniors to live. Active Aging is goal. The municipality in partnership with the parish councils, prepares the county for the senior population, making the Pombal more attractive, with a good transport network, better health care and mobility and improving housing, making them more safe, comfortable and adapted to the age and physical condition of its inhabitants.

    Services/Products

Amongst several projects developed by the Municipality, we highlight: the Municipal Support Program for Adaptation and Rehabilitation of Housing (AMPARHA), which consists of an intervention and qualification of dwellings of elderly people, in a situation of isolation, adapting spaces and accessibility to their restrictions, allowing them to live autonomous in their dwellings. Sport for All is a local program that provides individuals with a physical activity plan, oriented and regular, in order to promote their physical and psychological well-being. It consists of 3 weekly sports classes: 2 gymnastics and 1 hydrotherapy. The Domiciliary Tele-assistance Project aims to ensure that the elderly can remain in their homes, despite their isolation, giving them greater peace of mind and security. The Strategic Plan for the Senior Population aims to value the role of the elderly in the society promoting active and healthy aging through the participation in a diverse set of activities.

  • Município da Figueira da Foz

The strategic and privileged situation and the margins of the rich estuary of the Mondego River, have led throughout history to the establishment of numerous civilizations, in the lands that would constitute the municipality of Figueira da Foz. The importance acquired by the village of Figueira da Foz takes the King D. José, granting him, by decree of 12 March 1771, the category of Village. On September 20, 1882, Figueira da Foz was elevated to the category of city. The Paços do Concelho building is dated 1897. The Municipality of Figueira da Foz is located at southwestern Europe, on the Atlantic Coast and in the Center Region of Portugal, benefiting from an excellent network of road and rail accessibility. The city of Figueira da Foz is about 180 km from Lisbon, 120 km from Porto and 40 km from Coimbra. It has a strategically privileged position, which strengthens its affirmation as a tourist destination of reference and as a dynamic economic space, with endogenous potential and geostrategic position that promotes the development of activities related to tourism, catering, fishing, industry, agriculture and forest. It has a diversified offer of primary and hospital health care. With beaches along its Atlantic front, it has excellent conditions for leisure and its natural conditions, the mild climate and green spaces provide pleasant walks on foot or by bike, enjoying our immense marginal along the sea and river front and our cycle paths. The walking routes provide pleasant experiences of ecotourism, cultural and scenic tours and the practice of outdoor sports. Figueira da Foz has invested heavily in the promotion of healthy lifestyles and in creating conditions to enhance the quality of life of those who live here and those who visit us, presenting excellent conditions for active and healthy aging. It has been a concern of the Municipality of Figueira to create conditions for the promotion of healthy lifestyles, allowing a better quality of life for all, throughout the life cycle.

    Services/Products

For many years, it has been developing programs and streamlining activities specially targeted at the senior population, namely: Figueira Senior Card, STM- Municipal Transport Service, Municipal Program "Quality of Life", Figueira Senior Tours, Teleassistance, Figueira Senior Activities, Senior Health Project, Senior City Council, VirtuALL Project, among many other activities that allow the prevention and breaking of isolation and encourage an active and participatory life for the older citizens, emerging as satisfaction of the transversal needs of the community and as a strategy to combat social inequalities and reduce inequalities in health. Several of these programs have been in operation for many years, with proven acceptance and participation, constituting good intervention practices in this matter. The preparation of the active aging process, starting even in adulthood, is very important, so the Municipality's intervention in the Health area has privileged the intervention in relation to healthy eating, physical activity and health literacy, exactly because the quality of life of the elderly depends to a large extent on health care and their choices of healthy practices throughout their lives. The creation of the Municipal Program Figueira Cidade Healthy, following the adhesion to the Portuguese Network of Healthy Municipalities, has allowed an intervention guided by the reference frameworks of the WHO European Network of Healthy Cities, with the implementation of multiple risk prevention initiatives and activities cardiovascular disease, prevention of COPD, prevention of obesity and diabetes, as well as awareness of Active and Healthy Aging.

At the same time, it has been promoting over the years several projects in the areas of social support and health, available to the general public. These include the Alzheimer Patient and Family Support Office, supplemented by a Snoezelen Room, the "Mental Gym at Home" - a cognitive stimulation project at home that aims to promote "ageing in place" - and the "Youth and Elderly in a Click" - focusing on the intergenerational interactions through new technologies in the form of a Multimedia Room adapted to elderly people.

    Services/Products

Mutualista Covilhanense has developed several projects to promote active and healthy ageing. One of them is the Mobile Health Unit and Social and Psychological Support - "Health Near You". After several years of working exclusively in the city of Covilhã - through its Clinical Centre, Pharmacy and support services to senior citizens - the Association started this project in 2016, thus expanding many of the services already provided at its headquarters to the populations of the rural parishes around the city, with a special emphasis on the elderly. It operates in locations where public health services are non-existent or scarce, involving 25 partners (Covilhã Municipality, Beira Interior University, the university's students of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Sciences, among others). "Health Near You" operates with a multidisciplinary team (general practitioner, nurse, pharmacist, psychologist and social worker). The project also includes since 2018 an itinerant initiative "Workshop of Activities" with weekly thematic workshops: Physical Exercise and IT/Multimedia. Prizes awarded to the project: Innovate to Improve (Union of the Portuguese Mutualities, 2016); 1st place BPI Seniors (Banco BPI, 2016); Fidelidade Comunity (Grupo Fidelidade; 2018); Active and Healthy Ageing Good Practices Award in the Centre Region in the "Health +" category (Ageing@Coimbra and CCDRC; 2018).

The Center for Rapid and Sustainable Product Development (CDRsp) is an organic research unit of the Polytechnic Institute of Leiria, with scientific and administrative autonomy since February 2009; following the accreditation by the Foundation for Science and Technology in 2008. This research center has as main objective the production of scientific and technological knowledge, which contributes to the development of new products, materials and processes more efficient and sustainable. Its area of recognition is Mechanical Engineering, however the successive challenges that have been introduced to this center, associated with the high qualification of its human resources, have given it a prominent institutional dynamic in a set of other areas of knowledge, e.g. medical, automotive and aeronautics sectors. There is a growing importance of these areas, which complement and enrich their intervention strategy. With the demographic changes, a societal issue of extreme importance, which affects our country in particular, and with great expression in the region where we are inserted, the CDRsp is associated with the need to contribute to the promotion of active aging, through the development of new products and strategies of action in the area of additive manufacturing, in national and international partnerships.
